Peruvian seafood export sales generated USD 95.8 million in October, a 31.3 per cent reduction from the USD 140 million tallied the same month last year, the Ministry of Production (Produce) disclosed.
The exported volume fell 29.3 per cent to 82,200 tonnes against 116,300 tonnes dispatched a year ago.
This decline reflects fewer sales of fishmeal, canned seafood products, and frozen seafood products, which dipped 54.4 per cent, 44 per cent and 40.5 per cent, respectively.
According to the latest Statistics Bulletin drafted by Produce, 32,700 tonnes of fishmeal were exported in October, compared to 71,700 tonnes exported a year before.
Of the total volume exported, 28.6 per cent consisted of traditional fishmeal, 47.3 per cent of prime fishmeal, and 24.1 per cent of super prime fishmeal.
The main markets for Peruvian fishmeal were China, Germany, Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Spain, Australia, Indonesia, France, Canada and Italy, which together purchased 95.7 per cent of total export sales.
Meanwhile, raw fish oil exports totalling 27,700 tonnes were mainly shipped to Denmark, Belgium, Norway, Canada, Japan and Chile, which represented 96.1 per cent of the total.
Frozen seafood products equalling 16,000 tonnes were also exported in October, compared with 26,900 tonnes in the same month of 2008.
The majority of frozen products were elaborated using giant squid, squid, scallops, shrimp, hake, and mahi mahi, species which constituted 90.1 per cent of exports.
China, Spain, the United States, Korea, France, Ecuador, Italy, Thailand, Russia, Germany, Japan and Brazil acquired 86.1 per cent of frozen product exports.
Also in the tenth of the year, 1,400 tonnes of canned products were sold abroad.
Of this, 74.9 per cent corresponded to canned anchovy, mackerel, and jack mackerel.
These were primarily exported to Uruguay, Germany, Colombia, Spain, Bolivia, Panama, Dominican Republic and the United States, where 83.2 per cent of total exports were shipped.
Exports in October increased total volume exports in the first ten months of the year to 1,955,400 tonnes.
This figure reflects a 1.9 per cent decrease against the 1,993,500 tonnes exported in the same period of 2008, Produce’s report reveals.
This reduction was mainly the result of fewer canned and frozen product sales, which declined by 34.8 per cent and 12 per cent, respectively
The total value of exports through October totalled USD 1.89 billion, a figure that represents a 12.3 per cent reduction over the USD 2.16 billion generated over the same ten months last year.
