National Fisheries Products Quality Inspection Service(NFIS) in Busan informed on15th of January 2010 that they exposed about 4,500KG of North Korea’s frozen melania snail which has exceeded the allowance of lead and it were sent back and scrapped.
The standard amount of lead is 2.0mg/KG but it reached up to 2.4mg/KG.
In 2009 6,042M/T seafood from North Korea has examined of import through NFIS Busan and exposed 17M/T of them were founded foreign substance like lead ingot or nails and also exposed harmful ingredient like cadmium and lead.
NFIS said “We will try to do our best through intensive examination for North Korea’s seafood like volume and ingredient so that it can be the good seafood to distribute for further.”
For reference, by the end of December 2009 the import volume from whole countries were 980,800M/T and North Korea was 67,828M/T which accounted for 7%.
