USD 117 mln-seafood centre in the works (08/02)
The Ministry of Agriculture has invested CNY 800 million (USD 117 million) on a 408,473 sqm-Seafood Agricultural Centre to be built in Zhanjiang City that may become a platform for the global shrimp industry.

It will be the world's largest shrimp product trading centre with 10 tonnes-worth of cold storage plus logistics and information centres.

At the ceremony signalling the beginning of construction, Zhanjiang Municipal Party Committee Secretary Chan Yiu-kwong said he hopes it will be completed by September. Other guests included the Zhanjiang municipal party committee secretary, Chan Yiu-kwong, the director of Municipal People's Congress and the National Center for Urban Farmers Federation president.

The comprehensive shrimp industry cluster will meet the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Union’s (EU) international seafood standards.

The Seafood Agricultural Centre is designed to be the world's largest distribution centre for raw shrimp. It will integrate existing Zhanjiang City-based businesses and include updated intensive, mechanized and automated assembly line processing.

One thousand tonnes of ice will be used in raw shrimp processing and trading, deep processing and transportation plus preservation needs. The centre will also include an area for cooked shrimp processing to support the government's urban redevelopment projects, integrating, guiding and boosting operations that are currently scattered.

The centre will also incorporate the processing of shrimp shells and other parts, recycling, marine biotechnology, an aquaculture technology research base to promote the authority of technology centres and research institutions, research and development and promotion of new farming technologies, seeds, prawn drugs and the promotion of ecological aquaculture and environmental responsibility.

Finally, it will work with domestic commercial banks and credit companies, contingent on the different needs of different clients, to offer them custom-made financing.
